Stillwater Mtn

Had a nice day hiking Stillwater today. Decided to start the easier firetower mtns with the kids (4 and under) to see how they like it. Was a huge hit, trail was perfect their ages (about an hour each way for them). Trail, summit, and tower are all well maintained. Saw around 10-12 people.

In late July had an equally nice experience hiking Stillwater Fire Tower. Trail was well maintained and the fire tower it's self is just remarkable with a topo map in the cab illustrating the surrounding area once under the "watchful eye". We even crossed paths with one of the renovators and bought patches to mark the occasion which go as donations to help with further upkeep. Well worth the effort.

The group that did the renovations mans the tower on weekends between Memorial Day and Labor day. My brother was the "tower steward" the first weekend in August, he came down and stayed with us in Eagle Bay on the Saturday night. He'll do a 10+ hour day on the tower, then drive back to the west side of Rochester! Ah, to be young again!

It should be remembered that the trail crosses private lands, and is closed during deer season.

From the DEC Backcountry report for this week:

Big Moose Conservation Easement: The Stillwater Mountain Fire Tower Trail and the summit of the Stillwater Mountain will be closed to public use beginning October 8. The trail and summit will reopen on December 20.
