Black Bear Forum

Each year the DEC puts on a Bear forum at the White Otter Fish & Game club near Old Forge. They have a great program for anyone interested in learning about bears. I've been there the last 2 years and wasn't disappointed. I would highly recommend it.
This year it is going to be held on August 28th.
Here is some info from the 2002 press release I found on the web:

Annual Black Bear Forum -
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Regional Director Sandra L. LeBarron announced today that the 17th Annual Black Bear Forum will be held at the White Otter Fish & Game Club from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The public is cordially invited to attend.

"New York is blessed with a healthy black bear population which can be enjoyed by anyone interested in the outdoors and this Forum brings together people interested in bears, whether they are hunters or hikers," LeBarron said. "It's a great place to exchange information and ideas about bears and how to coexist with them."

The program is designed as an educational forum for people to learn more about New York's native black bear, including its habits, life cycle, pathology, laws & regulations, how to cook bear meat and dealing with nuisance problems. Lou Berchielli, black bear specialist with DEC, will discuss the natural history of bear populations in New York State, how to tell when a bear can be dangerous, plus an update on the development of an Adaptive Impact Management Plan for black bears in New York. Various displays and information of interest to sportsmen, campers, landowners and naturalists will be available.

Angie Berchielli, naturalist and professional photographer, will have a display of the interesting faces and postures exhibited by black bears, as well as a collection of Natural History books available. Ms. Berchielli will be available to answer questions on tips for photographing bears and other wildlife.

After the formal presentations, the public will have an opportunity to ask questions and express opinions on black bears or any aspect of the program..

The forum will be at the White Otter Fish & Game Club's Club House complex located on Woodgate Drive, 1/4 mile west of Route 28 at Woodgate in the Town of Forestport, Oneida County, 10 miles east of Boonville and about 28 miles north of Utica. A donation of $4 to the White Otter Fish & Game Club will include a complimentary lunch, access to all displays and programs, and door prizes. "

It's well worth the trip if you want to go!
