Long Lake in August
Greetings Hikers,
We'll be doing another NPT section in August and passing through the Long Lake area for the first time. I'm dreading the crowds I expect on the lake and at the shelters at this time of year. Luckily, we should be there during the middle of the week. Can anyone share their experience hiking Long Lake and staying at the shelters during August? Much thanks... |

It was 2007, so old info. We were at Catlin Bay mid week, no one else there. Do the work to find the second leanto that's close to shore - gorgeous spot, if the DEC hasn't destroyed it yet...
Plumleys is popular with boaters. Loud obnoxious boaters were there, with much booze and fireworks. Fortunately, we were not staying there, we hiked by, said hello, and continued up to Miller's Falls. |

The first Catlin Bay lean-to is set back pretty far from the lake, so it doesn't really get any use by the motor boat crowd. Hidden Cove and Rodney Point also get a little bit less use than Plumley's, but also aren't easy to find from the NPT.

You may want to bring a tent, this gives you a lot more flexibility in where you stay. There are some nice sites along the way.
AS DS says, the first Catlin LT is set back from the shore and not likely used by boaters. It's right on the trail. Kelly Pt. is very busy with boaters as there are docks to tie up to; I think? The southern Rodney LT is set back from the lake a short distance and not like used by boaters. There is no sign for it, but it is visible from the trail. Plumleys is going to be hit or miss in August, even during the week. I'd skip it if it were my trip. Weather makes a difference, too. If it's an all-day soaker, your may have the place to yourself. Thanks for the suggestions everyone! We're headed sobo and will be staying at CR 3 or 4 before Long Lake. Glad to know not all the lean-tos by the lake get crowded. Good info!
