While the satellite photo of today is partly cloudy I can make out that Indian, Piseco, and Lake Pleasant ice went out between April 15th and today.
Tomorrows photo should provide a nice shot of the entire park.

We're almost there. I fished 2 ponds the last 2 days. The 2nd one went out completely while I was there. Was cool to see the last bit break up and float away.

Ice is out of Cranberry, Raquette, Little Tupper, Long Lakes, etc., etc.,...
For what it's worth here are two comparisons one from April 9th and Today's (April 18th)...

Hiked into a pond in the Hammond Pond Wild Forest today and it was still frozen. The ice was pretty dark though so I expect it will go out within a day or two. So the ponds are still iffy. We did find one pond open though.

My co-worker was up at their camp in Tupper Lake over the weekend and said the big waters were open up that way but many of the small ponds were still iced over.

Can you zoom in enough to easily identify the lakes? |

Thanks for the great tip on the NASA site. I am having trouble zooming in close enough to see the smaller ADK ponds I prefer to fish. NASA doesn't zoom as close as google earth does, which is worthless for ice out. Can the settings be adjusted to zoom in closer or is that prevented for privacy or security reasons? |

Always have been told its around the first full moon in april which should be April 8th this year. Haven't done a lot of smelting personally though so cant vouch for it. BioGuide has some good Indian Lake smelting videos on youtube as well. Should give you another relative idea for timing.

When the smelt start running the lunker LL salmon become active for blue brassy spoons near the top. Troll in lakes like Blue Mountain Lake and others where they have been stocked.

Hard to troll when I have to 'Stay In Place:...
![]() I love deep fried smelt. First time I ever smelted my dad took me outside of Rochester. That was like 60years ago. Someone stole my gas lantern dad let me use when I was doing anything but fishing. Oops! That was back when they'd replace a Coleman lantern's glass with a cut out 1 gallon oil can so the light could be directed. |
