Hiking near Saranac Lake area

I'm going to do a lot of exploring because I've never been to this particular area, but in case I cannot find a good place to go hiking, can someone provide me an exact entry point to do some great hiking.

Looking for an area with some views, perhaps a river or stream, etc.

Right from saranac lake you can do the short but nice mile up Baker Mt. This is a very popular trip for locals. There is also scarface several miles away in Ray Brook. Of course if you go a few more miles you can get into more remote areas.

The best hike I can think of in that area is Ampersand.

I agree with the Ampersand recommendation. Trailhead is a few miles west on Rt. 3. From Ray Brook you can also hike Haystack (not the big one), McKenzie, and Scarface.

Well, actually Ampersand is off Rt. 3, on the way to Tupper Lake from Saranac Lake. Baker Mountain is just on the outskirts of the town of Saranac Lake, the trailhead just off Moody Pond. Both mountains are much more interesting climbs than Scarface and McKenzie, with better views, IMHO.

St. Regis Mountain is about 15 miles northeast of Saranac Lake. 6 mile round trip, fire tower mountain with excellent views.

McKenzie Mountain is a bit more challenging with 4 false summits and a peak that is one of the 100 highest in the Adirondacks, also with excellent views.

Scarface is also a nice hike up a mountain that doesnt seem to get as much use as others in the area. There are some nice views of the town of Saranac Lake from the mountain.
