Ironically, I stumbled across this press release shortly after stumbling across a moose in the backcountry. Will post some low quality photos and video when I figure out how to do so.

Moose sightings are rare but not the deer flies on Moose River Plains. Wow! One sees very few campers outside except for campfires with plenty of smoke.

Fun Fact: the moose is not native to Newfoundland. Four were introduced in 1904. The population now is estimated at over 150,000

My first moose sighting was in Newfoundland during a bike trip up the west coast. I'd gotten a flat and wanted to switch out the tube for a new one while spending a night in a cottage behind a farmhouse. My hand pump worked, but I was hoping for a standing pump with more umph so ventured into the barn to see if one existed there. I didn't find one in the main part, but then noticed a door and a light on in the room behind it. I opened the door and in front of me was a freshly butchered moose, bloody ax on the floor below it. As you can see there was a tennis racquet but no bike pump. Despite being dead, the moose was moving too fast to get a clear photo.
We did see many moose eventually, and when we rented a car to retrace our two-week bike route back to the ferry in one day, almost hit one within a mile of starting the drive.
