Feral hogs in Upstate NY

And if hunting them one by one is not the best way to eliminate / at least minimize the population , then I'm all for any land owners doing the old fashioned thing. Put food out in a clear area, when the hogs get used to that then put up a straight line of fence and keep feeding them. Next step continue on till you get 4 sides of the fence with a strong gate. When full , you close the gate and fresh pork for the whole neighborhood

Does anyone know what the current population estimate is.

From what I've learned, population estimates are hard to come by and fraught with uncertainty. What I can tell you is that an estimate of around 3,000 was made for Pennsylvania, which may have more wild hogs than NY state.

I spent a summer on a bait preference study on wild hogs in the Smokies back in the day, so I know a thing or two about hogs and what they like to eat. We tested groupings of 4 hogs at a time on a whole schedule of different baits.

If you want to feed hogs, all you need is corn feed. If you really want to attract them to the feed, it gets mildly more expensive and smelly.

By far, our hogs' favorite bait was sour mashed corn. A close second (maybe 40% less effective) was corn soaked in beer (which I would normally consider alcohol abuse, but 1) we only used Red White & Blue brand, and 2) wild boar meat is worth it). A distant third was corn soaked in strawberry extract.

So what your saying is I should put a pile of shell corn out in front of my treestand sprinkle a few cans of cheap beer on the corn, then a day or two later set up in the treestand and wait for feral hogs to come runnin.......... that sounds to easy

or better yet, take some used sour mash and spread that about...we won't talk about where that used mash came from or what it distilled into...

but some beer makers will have some,as well as some wine makers, sort of...

The man should legalize whisky stills. Then we would have enough sour mash to aid in the control of the pig problem. Everyone would be happy, except the tax man and Jim Beam. Just think about it whisky and pork, makes me mouth water.

10 years ago we had 6 hogs running around in the neighbor hood. DEC said to shoot them when seen. With in a couple of days 3 of them were shot and before summers end the other 3 were on the spit.

Yes they are!

Not going to be like pork in the store, probably leaner and considering what they eat you want to be very careful with dressing and preparing.

What type of hogs are they? From the story it sounds like a heritage strain that escaped and is now feral, if that's the case I'd say they are definately goot eatin'!

Braise them down all day long, nice and slow until the meat literally starts falling apart. Then put the wild boar 'stew' on some homemade jonnycakes.

Now, where did I put that old 45-70.........

I don't believe that Feral Hogs would be able to survive the winters in the Adirondacks. They would be able to survive in the areas of agriculture along the edges of the park.

Lack of food. Pigs are rooters. Once the ground is frozen and covered with a couple feet of snow they would have a very hard time finding enough food to keep them alive. They are not very well adapted to browsing like the whitetail deer.

Except, that pigs are omnivores so I'm sure they'll be able to survive of winter killed deer. Wouldn't be surprised if they even killed weak deer they came across.

Are those hogs any different than the coyote. I know they tear up roots but there isn't enough space in the park?
