Spring Creek Fishing

Has anyone out there had any success spring creek fishing?

Please NO SPOTS.

I'm intrigued to find and fly fish a true spring creek as I've read they can be home to large trout. I know of a couple of them within 45 minutes of me but have only fished one of them during unfriendly conditions and had no luck.

If anyone has any info they'd be willing to provide please PM me.

Pack your rod and bags and head to south-central PA. Big Spring Cr, Falling Spring and the Letort are all true spring creeks. Also, Spring Creek in Bellafonte/ State College is worth a look.

Ah success!

I went back to the spot I tried to fish before and (while it was sunny, hot, and the water was a bit low) I located and caught two beautiful brook trout.

The water was cold and with an abundance of aquatic life the brook trout were fat and eager to eat more.

They were very spooky so I look forward to an overcast day with which I will explore the stream further.

There are very few true spring creeks in new york state. Plenty of spring fed streams, but it is unlikely that the stream you fished is really a spring creek.

A Spring Creek by my thinking anyway is a stream who's gradient is so flat if not for the constant flow of groundwater would be unable to support trout. The majority of the trout streams in NY have good gradient and oxygenation whether they derive the majority of flow from groundwater or runoff. So henceforth are not true spring creeks. The only one I know is that famous one out there in WNY south of Rochester.

There are plenty of little trickles all across North America that by definition would be Spring Creeks but they are so small that you can step over them and are considered to be inconsequential. I do not live in trout country but I do have one of those trickles a few miles away and yes it has dinky little native brookies. Once in awhile a beaver dams it and we get fat 10"ers but within a couple years the pond is gone.

Here's an image of the creek from above. It starts as a hidden pond and flows out of that for less than two miles before emptying into another creek. The land is flat and meanders through fields. What do you guys think? Either way I'm thinking it could be a honey hole when the stream it feeds warms up.

I got out to the creek today and followed it upstream to the source which is an abyss lined with down trees. After some good hard fishing I was able to land this beautiful brown trout...

I went back to the creek and took some photos. Someone else had been there since so there were no fish to be caught in the abyss. I caught a fat 14" brookie in the subsequent pond and a 9" brookie in the grass of the creek.

Wow, what a find! Kudos on your research and where it led you! Who cares if it's formally declared a spring creek. Looks like it quacks like a duck to me!

In any event, I applaud your method in finding this gem. Treat it kindly and good luck!

Ever read "The River Why" by Dattus Proper. Great Book, though little known.

The main caricature takes a summer off to just fish, starts off catching the most fish, then the biggest fish then just that one elusive fish. Typical growth of a fisherman. Well, eventually he starts hiking up the river he's been fishing all summer to find the source of the river, figuring it will be a life changing experience. Thought a long chapter he finds much meaning while following the river. As the river gets smaller and smaller he knows he is about to find the source, rounds the last bend and his holy river.....ready for this.....
Comes out of a culvert under a parking lot.

Ain't that just life.

Check out the book it's a good one especially if you grew up in the 60's

"The River Why" was also made into a movie. The Adirondack chapter of TU showed it one evening but unfortunately I wasn't able to attend. The review I got was very good.

I looked for it, cant find it. looked on google and amazon. does his name have one t (Datus)? one T popped up on the search but either way i cant find it.

Wrong author - David James Duncan is the author. It was published in 1983. Just picked it off the shelf. Time for a re-read after 30 years.
