Houdini in the ADK?

Hey All,

New member here, and I'm hoping this community can assist in locating the area related to the following image. The legendary magician and escape artist, Harry Houdini, filmed scenes for one of his movies The Man From Beyond in and around the Lake Placid area. The picture below is from the climatic ending where he "swims in the rapids of the Niagara River."

I'm from the Niagara area and the picture does not resemble the geology or geography of the Niagara region. With Lake Placid being listed as a filming location for The Man From Beyond, does this river, gorge/rock formation and bridge look familiar to anyone?

The film was shot in 1921 so I'm sure a lot has changed over the years as Mother Nature can be brutal. But I'm hoping to track down this location to prove Houdini never swam in the rapids of the mighty Niagara. Thanks!

Doesn't look like any river I've ever seen in the ADKs. Rocks rock are too sharp-edged and consistently so.

No idea where that is, but I wouldn't guess LP.

I see where you get that, but this must be at least the 20's I'd guess based on the vehicle. Doesn't appear to be the same.

Still something about those rocks doesn't look right for ADK.

Probably not correct but it almost looks like the single lane bridge over the Sacandaga River along Old Corinth Road just above where it drains into the Hudson River in Hadley, NY.

Based on design, it looks like a RR bridge, but I can't tell in the pic. I see people and maybe vehicles, but they might be hand carts?

I agree. Was just a guess off the top of my head.

This may help if it is in NY.

You can maybe narrow the search by using the descriptions. It looks to be a decked Truss. It might be an inverted Pratt, but I can't tell for sure from that pic. It looks like it might be a Truss Leg Bedstead, in which case it's pretty rare and you might be able to hunt it down.

Adirondack Rail Bridge Photo - obviously not the one in the photo, but this makes me believe that it is an Adirondack RR Bridge due to similarities in the truss design.

I really wanted to guess initially somewhere in the Ausable Chasm area. I checked out the Keeseville RR bridge, and it's not that. Perhaps a defunct bridge in that area? The Geology of that area does seem to match.

Perhaps the film location used Lake Placid as its namesake due to the fact it was the closest area of notability.

Maybe you were thinking of this one in Hadley?

Thanks for these great leads! Keep them coming! More to chase down for sure.

I also stumbled across this Hudson Valley Railway bridge which crosses the Battenkill River. Would love to see what the geology looks like under that bridge as it looks pretty close.
