Peekamoose Blue Hole permit fee

I saw in the news that DEC was going to impose a $10 fee for permits to Peekamoose Blue Hole in the Catskills. I was disappointed to read that.

I am a big fan of the permitting system implemented at the AMR. And I hoped that it could be expanded to other trailheads. But my support of that system was based on it being free.

I am a fan of the system because it introduces much needed equity to trailhead access. It meant you no longer had to arrive at the trailhead at some ridiculous pre-dawn hour for a hike that didn't require such an early departure. But imposing a fee blows away that equity piece.

I know DEC was bothered by people making reservations and not showing. But just make it so that if you don't show within half an hour (or whatever) of your reservation time, you lose your spot and a "walk in" can take it.

Yeah they had to take control of the swimming hole. It was getting crazy in there over the last several years with out of control people trashing and over crowding the place. It was also a very popular drinking party spot at night.

A post from our sister forum has some insight:

As in many places, the state has failed for decades to properly manage the areas it claims to "manage." We all pay for this failure with loss of access.

There was another swimming hole on RT23A west of Palenville (Kaaterskill Clove). There was a large pull nearby. For a couple years I was climbing the waterfall ravines in the clove. I visited this swimming hole when no one ever visited. Then all of a sudden it got very popular with the pulloff and roadsides where possible filled with cars. Eventually the lot got closed off with Jersey Barriers. I'd heard for the same reason it being trashed. Things got out of control.

Another spot is Fawn's Leap a little farther on. Not sure the status there other than RT23A through the Clove is pretty well posted with No Parking signs. Also the road is pretty narrow and there are not many places wide enough to pull off onto anyway.

It's not DECs responsibility to teach people to respect things. By the time it falls into their lap it's way too late. This needs to learned from an early age and demonstrated by example by parents.

hahaha... yeah lets not tell anyone where the other swimming holes are. Id hate to see such destruction by people with no sense of responsibility or conscience.
